Sentence Modification: Can I Avoid Jail Time?

Being convicted of a crime does not always mean that you will be required to serve time in jail. Serving a straight jail sentence can be very devastating, especially if you have a job or other obligations. Fortunately, there are alternative sentences that enable people who qualify to serve out their sentence without it interfering with their work schedule.

The Work Release program is one such program that makes this possible. Depending on the particular program, you can serve your time during the weekends or the weekdays. You could be put to work picking up trash on our highways or perform janitorial duties. Such programs allow you to avoid having to suffer extended absences from work.

Another alternative sentence would be electronic monitoring, or house arrest. This program will allow you to commute to work or school and participate in other court-approved activities while you serve out your sentence. However, the expense that comes with having an electronic monitoring devise strapped to your ankle can be prohibitive to some. The courts have a number of other programs that can help you avoid a jail sentence. They include community service, diversion programs and home confinement..
