The answer to this question depends upon how old the alleged victim was at the time of the offense and how many acts of child molestation are involved.

A conviction for child molestation with a minor under 14 can result in a state prison sentence of 3, 6 or 8 years in prison for just one count. In some cases the court has the power to place you on probation for up to five years and as a condition of probation you can serve up to one year in county jail. If the conviction is due to molesting or annoying a minor who is under age 18, but over age 14, you could be convicted of Penal Code Section 647.6 as a misdemeanor. If that is the case you will be facing up to one year in county jail. However, if you are convicted of either Penal Code Section 288 or Penal Code Section 647.6 you will have to register as a sex offender pursuant to Penal Code Section 290.
