4 Arrested In Downtown Huntington Beach Killing

Huntington Beach police announced Thursday that four men have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of a 29-year-old Anaheim man in September near a downtown restaurant. The victim, Rozzalle Lamont Hellens of Anaheim, was discovered outside the Longboard Restaurant & Bar on Main Street around 2 a.m. on September 15, suffering severe injuries that proved fatal, according to police. Following the incident, the 200 block of Main Street was cordoned off for six hours while officers investigated the scene. Detectives from the Huntington Beach Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit spearheaded the investigation, though no details about the suspects or the possible motive for the homicide were disclosed in the aftermath.

On Thursday, police announced that four Huntington Beach men had been arrested in connection with the homicide. Arnaldo Steven Malaca, 33; Michael Cardoso, 29; Roberto Lopez, 25; and Jesus Torres-Martinez, 22, were identified as the suspects. They were booked on charges including suspicion of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and criminal street gang activity. Additionally, Malaca faced an extra charge of carrying a concealed firearm, though authorities have not confirmed whether a firearm was involved in the crime. The announcement followed a public advisory notice on Wednesday, which alerted residents to SWAT and detective operations in Huntington Beach’s Oak View neighborhood, near Beach Boulevard and Slater Avenue. According to HBPD spokesperson Jessica Cuchilla, the activity was linked to “a prior investigation” and posed no danger to the public. It remains unclear whether the victim, Hellens, was acquainted with the suspects. All four men, who are being held on $1 million bail, are scheduled to appear in Orange County Superior Court on Friday.

It is important to note that in most criminal cases, there is a limited period of time, known as the statute of limitations, during which criminal charges may be filed after the date of the alleged offense. However, in California, the crime of murder is unique in that it has no statute of limitations. This means that murder charges can be filed against an individual regardless of how much time has passed since the alleged crime. When a significant delay occurs between the time of the alleged crime and the arrest – as in this case, where over eight months have passed – the accused may face substantial challenges. Evidence may deteriorate over time, and memories of events may fade, putting the defendant at a significant disadvantage.

For individuals arrested in such circumstances, it is critical to retain highly experienced Wallin & Klarich criminal defense attorneys. Our skilled lawyers can thoroughly evaluate the prosecutor’s case and determine the strength of their evidence to build the best possible defense strategy.

When it comes to penalties, the consequences for murder in California are severe. First-degree murder is punishable by 25 years to life in state prison, life in prison without the possibility of parole, or even the death penalty in certain cases. Second-degree murder, while carrying slightly lesser penalties, still involves a sentence of 15 years to life in state prison, with potential enhancements depending on factors such as prior convictions or using a firearm during the crime. Understanding the gravity of these penalties underscores the necessity of having a strong Wallin & Klarich legal team on your side.
