High School Counselor Arrested On Child Pornography and Lewd Acts Charges

A high school drug counselor in Salinas, CA has been arrested for allegedly videotaping students engaging in sexual activity and for possessing child pornography. His sex crimes attorney refused to comment on specifics of the case, but an initial investigation by local police reveals some of the details.

According to reports, 34-year-old Gilbert Olivares was arrested on 19 felony charges, including lewd acts on a minor and possessing child pornography. The lewd acts charge stems from an incident where Olivares allegedly touched the buttocks of a male student. Olivares apparently also had several Facebook conversations with the same student.

The investigation alleges that Olivares videotaped students having sex in his office at the high school without their knowledge. The arrest report also states that Olivares was not in the room when the students were having sex.

Just how the students gained access to his office for sex is unclear at this time.

Police also raided Olivares’ home where they found 14 videos involving students as well as images depicting child pornography on his computer that had most likely been downloaded off of the internet.
Though Olivares has spent the last five years working at Salinas high school, and has an office there, he is not an employee of the school district. Olivares is employed by a private agency and works as a drug and alcohol abuse counselor at the high school.

Depending on the results of the investigation, the child pornography charge could also result in a federal criminal case, while the lewd acts on a minor charge would result in lifetime registration as a sex offender if convicted.
