California Woman Gets 3 Speeding Tickets in Under an Hour and a Misdemeanor Charge for Good Measure

When does a routine traffic stop for speeding turn into handcuffs and a criminal charge for the driver? When that traffic stop was the third speeding violation for the same driver in under an hour, with two of the tickets being for speeds in excess of 100 MPH.

Our criminal defense attorneys deal with hundreds of traffic cases each and every year. But one California woman celebrated her birthday a little too hard, and simply refused to learn her lesson.

Lynne Cahill-Gomez was celebrating her 53rd birthday when she was pulled over for reaching speeds of 103 miles per hour according to California Highway Patrol. Twenty minutes later, a different CHP officer clocked her going 105 miles per hour. She was issued a second ticket and sent on her way. The third time was the unlucky charm, as Cahill-Gomez was pulled over again for doing 76 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone. This time, in addition to a ticket, Cahill-Gomez was arrested for reckless driving.

In California, the punishment for reckless driving can be up to 90 days in jail and as much as a $1,000 fine. If convicted, the DMV will also put 2 points on your license and your insurance company could drop you completely. It is against the law to drive without insurance in California.
We’ve seen cases where an individual is arrested for reckless driving for one instance of going over 100 MPH. The fact that this woman was given multiple chances to slow down and go on her way is almost as unusual as a person getting three speeding tickets in the span of 58 minutes.
