Riverside County Teacher Arrested for Sex with an Underage Student

A Hemet High School teacher was recently arrested on suspicion of having sex with a student on campus. Hemet Unified School District officials notified Riverside County sheriff’s deputies that a teacher may have been involved in a sexual relationship with a minor at the school, Hemet PD Sgt. Wally Clear said in a report.

Sheriff’s detectives said Janel Ramirez, 31, and a male student were involved in sexual acts at the school during the month of December. The district would not disclose the student’s age.

As of right now, teachers can date and have consensual sex with students IF the student is 18 years of age or older. However, a lawmaker is hoping to change that with a new law that would make such relationships a felony, even if the student is 18. This new law would also strip school employees of their pensions and retiree health care if they are convicted of certain crimes.

The bill would also criminalize seductive communication, including sexual text messages.
