Researching Drug Court

The question will remain, does Drug Court reduce the recidivism rates of drug offenders?

Thousands of people addicted to drugs are in every corner of our country and repeatedly have to go to court to address these issues. Drug Court is a new way to address the problem. Drug court has many ways to encourage and to assist people who are addicted to drugs. The counseling offers support, structure, supervision, and economic development to participants in this program.

Drug Court’s Four-Phase Program

How can drug court assist individuals addicted to narcotics?

The success of drug court is based on the four-phase program which consists of intensive supervision by a probation officer, along with individual and group counseling, frequent court appearances, random drug and alcohol testing, and regular team meetings to discuss the participant’s progress.

As participants progress through the phases they are held accountable to program requirements, if they are non compliant they can receive sanctions from the court. Participants are also rewarded with incentives for positive behavior.

In order to graduate participants are required to:

  • Obtain their high school diploma or a GED;
  • Be gainfully employed or attending a training/academic program;
  • Attend regular self-help meetings and;
  • To have maintained consistent attendance at all court hearings, probation and counseling appointments.

Studies have shown that Drug Court has significantly reduced re-arrest rates or reconviction rates for individuals in these programs by an average from 8 to 26 percent, with most courts reducing crime anywhere from 35-40 percent. (Vol.124 No. 74 of the Daily Journal at 2.)

Moreover, there is a cost benefit for Drug Courts in California, in that for every dollar invested in drug court, anywhere from 1.40 to 16.10 is saved due to reduced recidivism. (Vol.124 No. 74 of the Daily Journal at 2.)
