Lonnie Franklin, Jr., who is accused of murdering ten women in Los Angeles over three decades, was indicted this week by a Los Angeles County grand jury. Franklin, Jr., also known as the alleged “Grim Sleeper”, is now set to stand trial in Los Angles County Superior Court, in the near future. The grand jury heard testimony from forty witnesses over a six day period. At the end, the grand jury concluded that there was sufficient evidence for Franklin, Jr. to stand trial.
The Los Angles County District Attorney’s Office does not usually use grand juries to indict defendants. Instead, it is the Office’s normal practice to utilize preliminary hearings. However, in this case, Los Angeles County District Attorney Steve Cooley chose to utilize a grand jury and the strategy proved to be effective for Cooley.
