On January 21, 2011 a federal judge, Judge Susan Illston, ruled that several retired and current Major League Baseball players, including some of Barry Bond’s former teammates, must testify in Bonds’ upcoming perjury trial.
Bonds pleaded not guilty to ten counts of perjury and an obstruction charge after testifying before a grand jury in 2003 that he never knowingly took steroids. The federal judge ruled that the players would testify even though they have ties to Bonds’ former trainer, Greg Anderson, who has refused to testify and may go to prison for contempt of court.
According to the Associated Press, Bonds testified that Anderson supplied him with substances Bonds assumed were legal supplements. However, prosecutors hope the player’s testimonies will persuade the jury that Bonds must have known that Anderson was giving him illicit performance enhancers..
