4-month-old Andrew Garcia was killed during a gang related shooting in a Van Nuys neighborhood by two unidentified male suspects that remain unfound. Andrew Garcia’s parents, Marlene Ramirez and Frank Garcia were dropping off a friend when the two suspects confronted them and shortly after, began firing at the group, hitting Andrew and the friend in the head. While the friend survived, Andrew died at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. The parents were not hit, but a family friend that was also with them, Eric Ramirez, did suffer minor injuries.
While family members deny that Frank Garcia and Eric Ramirez have any gang ties, Los Angeles police stated that Eric is a known gang member and that Frank has some associations. Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Michel Moore states that gang-related crime has decreased in Van Nuys within the last two years; however, increases in gang-related shootings can occur simultaneously.
